On February 2, 2015 the SJMC Graduate Medical Education submitted the Intent to Apply for Institutional Accreditation under the terms of the Single Accreditation System. This begins the timeline for AOA programs to apply for ACGME accreditation. Sports Medicine

Dr. Vangelos completed his undergraduate studies from Bowling Green State University and is a graduate of Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Residency & Fellowship at Brentwood Hospital (South Pointe) where he has served as Sports Medicine Fellowship Director. He is currently Program Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship at St. John Medical Center, Westlake, Ohio. Dr. Vangelos has many years experience with both amateur and professional athletes. He has served as Team Physician to the Cleveland Indians since 1991 and the U.S. Soccer Foundation since 1989.

Upon completion, the trainee is board eligible for the AOA Sports Medicine Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine.

Applicants must complete an AOA-approved residency prior to entry into the Fellowship in one of the following: Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Manipulative Medicine. Prior to entry, the applicant must provide evidence of board certification in one of the specialties.

Applicants may apply using the universal application. A completed application will contain at a minimum:

  • Completed universal application;
  • Official transcript of the college of osteopathic medicine or graduation and a copy of the diploma;
  • A letter confirming successful completion of an AOA internship and residency;
  • A copy of the board certificate or documentation of board eligibility;
  • A valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state of the United States and, prior to the start of the program, an Ohio license;
  • A curriculum vitae;
  • Three professional letters of recommendation
  • A personal statement
  • COMLEX score reports for Part I, II, III & PE;
  • AOA and respective specialty college membership;
  • Other information as requested by the Selection Committee
